Too good to be true

Saw a posting for a secret shopper ad on LinkedIn. Figured it couldn't hurt to show interest. Gave my contact info. Next thing I know, I'm getting emails and texts confirming my selection as a secret shopper for Walmart. Thing is, they sent a fairly legit looking check from St. Louis Community Credit Union for $2950.52. They said to deposit the check and keep a $400 commission for myself after purchasing ebay gift cards with the remaining $2500. I was then supposed to scratch off the security seals on the cards and supply the numbers via a "report" online to [email protected] They sent everything via trackable priority mail, so at first it seems legit. However, it seemed too good to be true. Glad that I chose to do a little research on the "company" because the check and letter seemed suspicious, and I realized this was a scam.

eBay Gift Card Scam

I received a cashier's check of $2950 and a letter with instructions of how to use the funding to conduct secret shopping for this company. I was advised to deduct $400 from this $2950 for my work compensation and use the remaining money to buy ebay gift cards.
The approach is totally alarming to me since they reached out to me through LinkedIn (my professional account). They told me to cash or deposit a bad check and then purchase ebay gift cards and scratch off the back of the cards. Then submit a report back to them via email they provided in the letter along with pictures of the front and back sides of all the gift cards. They did not provide an actual physical location of the business. All they provided is their email "[email protected]"

Mystery Shop Scam

I just received a USPS Priority Mail envelope from Matthew Wayne, 214 Porter Village Circle, Nashville, TN 37206. Inside were two pieces of paper; a very poorly put together "Secret Surveyor Evaluation" explanation and instructions and an extremely thin "cashier's check" drawn against St. Louis Community Credit Union, for the amount of $2,950.52. Files attached to report. I am a seasoned professional mystery shopper and this is not how any mystery shop works!

I believe that a personal acquaintance to whom I am connected on LinkedIn has been hacked. I suspect this because on 1/30/18, I received an InMail message from her about making extra money mystery shopping with assignments paying $300 per shop. I thanked her for thinking of me and clicked the link to "register" with the agency (https://goo.gl/K9dbsh). This InMail message now shows that I corresponded with LinkedIn Member and my acquaintance's account is now gone.

Scam attempt

Received a check in the mail along with document stating I had been chosen to be have a secret survey assignment. The typing had spelling errors and did not sound legitimate. Paper stated I need to deposit the check. Take my cut of it, then buy $2500 worth of eBay gift cards. Then I would need to scratch the back off of these gift cards and send pictures to the email given.

At first glance I was stunned and excited. I remember signing up for a different site, but not specifically this one. Upon further examination of the check it is 100% fake, printed on printer paper not the print at home checks you can do with your bank. Also the “sender” was different from who signed the document. Then a different name signed the check. AND on the check in the “memo” portion there is another name. 4 different names total.

Completely obvious this is a scam.

I used to be a real secret shopper in the past. This is totally not the usual way of conducting the business.
The approach is totally alarming to me since they reached out to me through LinkedIn (my professional account). Their website does not even exist or created. Their idea of telling me to cash or deposit a bad check and then purchase bunch of ebay gift cards and scratch off the back of the cards. Then I have to submit a report back to them via email they provided in the letter along with pictures of the front and back sides of all the gift cards. They did not provide an actual physical location of the business. All they provided is their email "[email protected]" The address I provided in the complaint is found on the mailing label as a return address.

I received a USPS Priority Mail Flat Envelope from Stefanie Hammons 110 Hickory Hill Ct, Nashville, TN 37214. 2 pieces of paper inside. One is a check from St Louis Community Credit Union from Cerissa C Hinson, to me in the amount of $2900.92. The 2nd paper is the instruction sheet. I'm supposed to deposit the check, then buy EBay gift cards totaling $2500.00. Fill out the survey which includes entering the numbers off the silver scratch off area on the cards. Nice try, but I'm not STUPID!!!!!!
