Attention: US residents who have been dealing with suspicious businesses are considered to be at risk of identity theft. It is highly recommended that everyone affected obtains identity theft protection service as soon as possible. One of the least expensive identity theft protection plans we were able to find is provided by LifeLock. You can give them a try by clicking here.

I received a call back in August, the pitch sounded legit, but when I received donation letter it said it was not tax deductible. So I called the consumer protection agency, he looked it up and saw a number of complaints, I went on the line looked for myself and saw 22 complaints, somethings wrong.

National Veteran's Committee-no affiliation with military

I received a phone call from a rather nice man, named Doug. He gave me the spiel of helping veterans who are returning from Afghanistan, as well as those being underserved by the VA Hospital and would I consider being a sponsor for them? He provided me options of Gold-50.00, Silver 25.00, Bronze 15.00. When I asked him whether or not they were a 501c3, he admitted that he was not. I then offered to put him in touch with our hiring managers since we hire veterans both here in the US and abroad. He said sure and asked me to hold on the line at which point, his closer supervisor (never got her name) came on to verify that I was okay with doing the donation. For the record, I have no intention of doing the donation as they are not affiliated with anyone or any service that actually does support veterans.

Received a phone call, the man asked for another person. I told him he had the wrong number, but he told me maybe I could help. He proceeded to tell me about this charity and asked if I could donate anything. After telling him I was no finically able, he asked if I could donate $15. I agreed then was transferred to someone who would get my mailing address to mail me the invoice. Once I received the invoice, I googled the charity and sure enough the first result was that so many people have reported this "charity" as a SCAM.

When I received the call, I was told to send a check. I was then sent to someone wh8 was going to take my mailing information. She immediately asked for the credit card I was using. I told her I was spending a check, she sounded confused. I just received my "invoice". I googled the name "Paula S. Marra", who is listed as the President of said committee. I found a lawyer in a different state than thWisconsin (which is where the "charity" has an address). The number listed on the "invoice" comes up with nothing. There is no website and no affiliation with any charity. There is a National Veterans Committee listed, however as a political group in another country. I don't recall which. "Contributions...not tax deductible..." was the clincher.

Fake Charity

I received the same calls it looks like everyone else here mentions, selling me on making a $15 donation and said they would send the invoice in the mail. I received it and had my check filled out and ready to mail when I read on the letter that accompanied the invoice that my donation was NOT tax deductible for Federal Income Tax purposes, which finally raised the red flag. So I looked them up online and sure enough, here they are scamming anyone they possibly can! I tore my check up, back to not answering sales calls for me!

Frank, Can you provide your source? I, like the others here, have not been able to find any evidence of legitimacy for this group. That is not "capitalism at it's best".

it,s not a scam if they are registered with the AG and pay taxes. Capitalism at it,s best America

I did the same as Alison: looked up the charity on line, found this site, and just read the first complaint about them to the guy calling me. He said thanks and hung up.

while I was on the call, I looked up National Veterans Committee online, finding this page. I wasn't rude in my decline to the telemarketer, however, I did let him know that his was not a legitimate "charity".

Got a call from someone asking for me by name. I recently changed from Vonage to Comcast Voice, and they probably sold my number to a bunch of folks out there, because I get nonstop bogus calls, from contacting companies to solar to "charities". I don't hire or especially give money to anyone who calls me; I can make those mistakes all by myself. So he tells me he represents National Veterans Committee, which sounded like another "charity" that called me recently with the same tactics, the "Pro-Life Committee - National Campaign", which after researching turned out to be nothing but a scam that someone is getting rich off of. I told him I would like to research his charity before I could give any money and he said "OK, can we count on a one-time donation of $15 then?" I said, send me your letter and I'll decide. He said Ok and hung up. Waiting to see the paperwork. 925-266-5865

I just got the call. They asked for someone who doesn't live here -- on my cell phone. I did everything I could to avoid saying "Yes" because I knew they were recording, and I've heard of scams in which they record you saying "Yes" and then use that to commit you to some huge obligation. Anyway, the guy said they'd send out a pledge packet. Then the "confirmation" lady gets on and asks for a credit card number. I asked that she send a pledge card, instead. Based on what I've read here (and other websites), I will not be returning that card with my donation. I've also blocked the number in my cell phone.

so glad i found this discussion group. They originally asked for my husband, when I asked who they were, they said, "Oh we can just talk to you". Definitely doesnt seem right so I am sitting here with the "bill" they sent. wanted to see if it was legit. nothing on BBB, so just searched the internet for "National Vererans Committee" Thank you all for the heads up!!!!!

I just had the same phone call only mine was an actual person and they wanted a minimum donation. I also looked them up and when I told I saw they were a scam they immediately hung up the phone no reply. Click. This sounds like a scam for sure.

I just received the same phone call, I knew it was a scam from the beginning. However, I decided to play along. First, you can hear the click of the recording and if you do not say anything then it jumps to the statement "so are you comfortable with you $$ donation"? Absolutely not!!! I asked numerous times what organization they were collecting money for and they gave me the same pre-recorded saying over and over. They finally got irritated and hung up on me.

Same thing happened to me. They sent me a bill in the mail so I decided to look up their organization. I cannot find anything online about them, except complaints! I definitely will not be sending them any money.

I've had almost the exact same experience. I spent a lot of time on the Internet trying to find out who this "organization" is, to no avail. They have no internet presence.
