OfferUp Scam

I have learned after the fact that this group is targeting people on apps such as offerup, letgo and the like to purchase furniture or other items. They prefer to contact you off of the site using email and offer money to have the item deleted from the site so they can purchase. Every communication is done using email or text. No verbal communication. The party then advises they will send you a check with fees that include additional funds for reserving the item to purchase from you. A follow up email was sent to me with more details after I gave my name telephone number and address for the person to send the check. Up until the last email I realized it was a scam. The last email advised that I was supposed to deposit the check into my bank account, immediately withdraw the funds, take my portion of the fees for my listed items and now the additional fees which were originally for me to reserve the item, were for me running around for whoever this person is to make a transaction at Moneygram to send the "Shipping Fees" to the shipper. This is when a red flag went off. I started doing some investigations and found people had reported similar stories about the person using the email address [email protected]

Contacted by scammer on OfferUp. She said her aunt was interested in the items thatI was selling and that i should contact the aunt via e-mail ([email protected]) when I contacted the "Aunt", she came up with a story of wanting to pay extra for my items and that she would send Bank Certified Check, and come and pick u[p the items later. Everything sounded a little fishy. So I googeld her e-mail and this site came up.

I posted a brand new purse I was selling for $30 on the site OfferUp. Immediately someone messaged me regarding the item and they seemed interested. They gave an email and requested to do the transaction through email. Not knowing any better I did as told and provided Name, address, phone #, not thinking it was a scam due to the fact that they were insistent on being fair and honest. Even sent "God Bless". A couple of emails later, they emailed that the certified check was on the way. An additional $50 for going out of my way and holding the item for them besides the $30 original price for the purse. They also wanted me to take the item off the site as soon possible. They seemed really honest people. Thank goodness I found this site and found the same people scamming others like myself. I can't wait to hear from these crooks and give them a piece of my mind.

This person tried to scam me on offer up

I was searching for a Jeep Wrangler and came across an offer. Emailed the seller and they continued to email me and wanted me to pay them through eBay and they would ship the car to me. Searched this online and found it to be a scam. I wanted to report it so other people would be aware. This is the email they sent me.

Hello and thank you for being interested in buying my 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport. My name is Sarah Hester. My car is in great shape, no engine problems, damages, hidden defects, never abused. It was always garaged and never smoked in. It has a 4.0L 6cyl engine, automatic transmission, 4X4, 125,229 miles. Black exterior paint are great, no scratches and no dents; the interior is gray and clean; it has never been involved in accidents; no liens or loans; the title is clear. My last price is $1,000 (no payments; no trades). I bought the car when I was serving in Langley Air Force Base, VA but I was promoted and transferred to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska for a 3 years period and don't want to store it. Hate to sell it but I do not want to let it destroy my backyard, beside this it's not worth keeping insurance and paying storage fees. Therefore I need a fast and reliable buyer, so if you have the money ready to buy it email me back.

I look forward to hearing from you!
SSgt. Sarah Hester

And then I asked to look at the vehicle and this was the second email I received.

Hi again, as I've told you, at this moment I am in Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, AK in a military base. I do a special training program each day and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or call whenever I want. The reason I'm selling this car way below market value is because I don't have time for negotiations and I need money before October 30 for my next house in Anchorage. Before leaving I had pre-arranged the deal with eBay so my presence is not necessary. They can protects both buyer and seller and it's the right way to do this. The car is in their possession at eBay storage warehouse in Richmond, VA, crated and ready to be delivered. eBay will handle this transaction and the total amount that you will pay is $1,000 (NO hidden or shipping fees). After the payment is confirmed and secured by eBay I will start the shipping. You will receive the car at your home address within 2-3 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing period after delivery and then I will get the payment. SO...ONLY AFTER you receive the car and agree to keep it, eBay will release the payment to me, in this way we are both protected. If by any reason you find something you don't like about it you can send it back on my expense but I'm sure it won't be the case because my car is in excellent condition. It will come with all the necessary paperwork (clear title, bill of sale, user's auto. etc). You will receive all the original documents. I signed all the paperwork and the clear title is ready to be transferred to the new owner.
I need to know if you are still interested, so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If you are interested, please include in the next email your contact information for eBay (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can move forward with this transaction.
